Low Water Pressure in the House: Causes and Fixes

The first thing to work out is whether it is the whole house or just one tap. One tap is nearly always a blocked aerator or a worn cartridge in that fixture, and it is a small job. The whole house points at something shared: the pressure regulator, the main shut-off not fully open, or build-up in older pipes. Knowing which it is saves you paying to diagnose the wrong thing.

What to do right now

  • Test several taps, hot and cold, upstairs and down. Write down which are weak. This one step tells you and us more than anything else.
  • If it is one tap, unscrew the aerator from the end of it and look. If it is furred with white deposits, soaking it in vinegar often brings the flow straight back.
  • Check whether it is hot only, cold only, or both. Hot only points at the water heater side, not the house supply.
  • Find your main shut-off and check it is fully open. It is a common find after other work.
  • Note whether this came on suddenly or crept up over months. Sudden points at a valve or regulator. Gradual points at build-up.

Likely causes

  • One fixture only: the aerator, the little screen that screws into the end of a tap, is blocked with mineral build-up. Arizona water leaves deposits quickly and this is very common.
  • One fixture only: a worn cartridge or valve inside that tap or shower, which restricts flow even when everything else is fine.
  • Whole house: the pressure regulator, a device where the water comes into the house that keeps incoming pressure at a sensible level. They wear out, and when they do, pressure drops everywhere at once.
  • Whole house: a main shut-off valve that is not fully open, sometimes after other work has been done.
  • Whole house: scale and corrosion narrowing older galvanised pipe from the inside, which comes on gradually over years rather than suddenly.
  • Hot water only: build-up in the water heater or a partly closed valve on its supply.

Low Water Pressure in the House: Causes and Fixes, FAQ

Only my shower is weak. Is that the same problem?
Almost certainly not, and that is good news. A single weak fixture is nearly always that fixture: a blocked screen or a worn cartridge. It does not mean anything is wrong with the rest of your plumbing.
It dropped off suddenly across the whole house.
Sudden and everywhere usually means a valve or the pressure regulator rather than build-up, because build-up happens slowly. It is worth having looked at rather than waited out.
Could my water softener cause this?
It can. Softeners have a bypass and internal valves, and a fault there restricts everything downstream. If your pressure problem started around the same time as any softener issue, mention that when you call.
Would a booster pump fix it?
Sometimes, but it is the wrong first move. If the cause is a failed regulator or a half-closed valve, adding a pump is treating the symptom and paying for equipment you did not need. Find the cause first.
